Why DIP led display have longer lifespan than SMD LED display

Summary:
Normally, there are two LED types for outdoor projects, DIP and SMD. Before going into today’s topic, here will show you the simple meaning for DIP and SMD firstly. DIP, is the abbreviation of double in-line package. As for SMD, you can know it means the surface mounted device. These two different LEDs makes the LED panel into two different lifespans. Naturally, there will be some reasons.
1. Different package
The DIP RGB lamps were packed in three independent packages. It means there will leave enough space for the LEDs. As we know when the electric LEDs go into working, they will generate heat. And this space is perfectly good for heat dissipation.
Back to SMD LEDs, it was packed in one package. As a result, it is not so good for heat dissipation.
For a long time for using, especially in outdoor environment, the LED screen will suffer more severe weather change, such as intense sunlight. If the heat can’t have a good emission, the high temperature will cause accelerated aging for the main LED devices, and affects their life.
2. The size in chip
The chip is a main core in LEDs. It directly affects the quality of LEDs.
DIP have bigger size LED chip than SMD LEDs. Therefore, it demands lower electric current and less heat generated. That exactly slow down the loss in the whole part and these lamps can be used for a longer time.
In addition, such as P10 DIP model and P10 SMD model, when they work in the same situation, you can see clearly the DIP LEDs is in a higher brightness. Thus, DIP LED screen would be a better option if the project requires a quite high brightness.
3. The appearance
Look at a DIP lamp, you will obviously observe that the DIP has longer pins.
These pins can simply go through the PCB board and makes the silicon gluing easily. And the lamp can be firmly fixed on the board. In this way it is also effective for heat dissipation and perfect waterproof.
Then SMD LEDs, they are mounted on the PCB without pins. Just like it is name, surface mounting on the board. And sometimes, it will cause soldering skips. And the waterproof is a little weak than DIP model.
